Arthur G. Chaves `54
Title: Class of 2009

Arthur "Archie" Chaves, `54, was a "first-class" second baseman who was selected team captain in 1954. Chaves hit well for contact as he led the team for three seasons which included a .341 mark in his third year on the team. When Hall of Fame shortstop Jack Regele `56 arrived on campus for Chaves's junior year, the two formed a "sparkling double play combination"..."which cut short many prospective big innings for their rivals," according to the 1953 class yearbook. Chaves will be the 27th baseball player inducted into the Hall of Fame and the third player from the initial Lancer baseball teams.

Chaves, a native of Framingham, was a history major who was extremely active in several organizations on campus which included the international relations club, the geography club, the music appreciation club, the men's athletic association and the student council. Chaves also served as the president of the international relations club in his junior year and of the student council in his senior year.

Chaves graduated with his master's degree in education from Boston University and earned his doctorate in education from Boston College. Chaves spent most of his professional career dedicating himself to Framingham State College serving in various roles which included Director of Planning and Development, Acting Academic Dean, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Executive Vice President. He was appointed the first McAuliffe Fellow/Director and he was also instrumental in establishing the McAuliffe Center for Education and Teaching Excellence at the College.

Chaves was also a founding member and CEO for the Framingham State College Foundation and he served on many other college committees. In recognition of his service the college awarded him with an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, in 1994. Chaves served his community in many ways as he was a charter member of the Danforth Art Museum as well as a member of several planning committees for higher education facilities, libraries and public school buildings. He was most proud in his role in founding the federal funded Head Start Program for needy Framingham school children.

It is with great pleasure that we induct Arthur "Archie" Chaves postumously into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
