In his fourth season on the sidelines at Worcester State, Cy Butler will continue to guide the wide receiver corps and serve as the passing game coordinator.
Coach Butler brings a tremendous amount of experience to the Lancers as a coach on both sides of the ball while he was also enjoyed a stellar playing career as a wide out and return specialist. He helped coach Graham Asum to become the programs seventh football all-american selection as a return-man in 2012.
In 2011, Coach Butler was the defensive coordinator at Moses Brown School and he also served a similar capacity at Providence County Day School in 2010. Before a brief stop at Mount Ida in 2009 to help pilot the running backs, Coach Butler served as the special teams coordinator, wide receivers and defensive backs coach in 2008 at South Kingston where he would help lead the Rebel’s to the 2008 Division 2 RI State Championship.
In 2008, Coach Butler was interim assistant offensive coordinator while playing for the New England Surge. While also playing in the Arena League, he would help pilot Moses Brown as an assistant coach from 2005-07.
Following a standout career at the University of Rhode Island, Coach Butler played in the Arena League from 2001-06 for the New Haven Ninjas, the Mohegan Wolves and the Albany Conquest. In his six seasons he would finish with totals of 129 receptions for 1,497 yards to go with 33 touchdowns.
In addition to holding two of the top seven all-purpose single-season yardage marks while at URI, Coach Butler finished his career as the leader in all-purpose yardage (5,380), second in career passes caught (189), sixth in career receiving yardage (2,348) and tied for seventh with 14 receiving scores from 1993-96. He was also a team captain in 1996.
A 1993 graduate of Weston High, Coach Butler was also a Hall of Fame athlete. Among the career highlights, Butler was the 1993 Boston Globe Player of the Year, a two-time All-Boston Globe and Boston Herald selection, and he helped lead the 1991 squad to the Division 6 Super Bowl Championship.
