Ice Hockey Doubles Up Westfield State, 2-1

Auburn, MA --- Freshman Nathan Stanley (Boise, ID) scored the game winning tally with 3:50 remaining in regulation to help lead Worcester State to a 2-1 triumph over Westfield State in MASCAC ice hockey action this evening at Horgan Rink.

After a scoreless 45 minutes of play, the Lancers (6-6-2, 3-4-2 MASCAC) went up 1-0 on a score at the 5:18 mark in the third period by first-year Stephen Rock (Tulsa, OK) when he received some help from Stanley and freshman Vinny Bohn (Spring Hill, FL).

The Owls (2-9-2, 1-6-1 MASCAC) would score the equalizer by senior Pat Nelson (Cary, NC) 60 seconds into a power play. Nelson was fed the puck by freshman Frank Zuccaro (Newmarket, ON) and junior Jeff Callahan (Londonderry, NH).

But Stanley would score his second goal in as many games off a rebound off as he got some assistance from freshman Curtis Martin (Okotoks, Alberta and classmate Andrew Pierson (Clovis, CA) with the extra-main advantage.

Westfield State would pull their goalie for the final 1:08 in favor for the extra skater, but it was to no avail as the hosts would hold on for the win that put them into a tie for fourth-place in the conference standings.

Worcester State led in shots after the first period, 14-12, but the Owls would hold the 26-18 edge in the final two frames. The contest also proved to be a physical one as there were 22 combined penalties between both squads.

WSU senior Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY), who came into the contest leading the MASCAC in goals against average and save percentage, stopped 37 of the 38 shots he saw on the evening while sophomore Eddie Davey (Orangeville, ON) collected 30 in the setback.

Both teams will host MASCAC opponents on Tuesday. Worcester State will take on Fitchburg State at 5:30 while Westfield State entertains Framingham State at 7:30 PM.
