Johnson Scores Pair in 2-1 Victory over Southern Maine

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Angela Johnson (Ashby, MA) tallied two goals and senior Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) recorded a pair of assists to help pace Worcester State, 2-1, over Southern Maine in Little East field hockey action this evening at Coughlin Field.

With the win the Lancers improve to 6-3 and 2-1 in the conference while the Huskies slip to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in LEC play.

Both teams played outstanding defense throughout the contest. After the first half both teams were even in shots (7-7), but Southern Maine turned it up in the second stanza as they rattled off nine shots compared to the Lancers one attempt. The Huskies also had a slight edge in penalty corners, 8-5.

Johnson knocked back the first of her two goals at 11:17 when she took a feed from Rosborough.

USM freshman Christine Hill (Morrill, ME) knotted the game, 1-1, for her first goal of the season, when she hit a penalty stroke past senior keeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, ME) at 28:33.

The Lancers scored again at the beginning of the second period when Rosborough dished the ball to Johnson at 41:36.

Southern Maine tried to rally several times in the games closing minutes to tie the score. Around the 59 minute mark, junior classmates Melissa Rivet (Bridgeton, MA) and India Lowe (Gloucester, MA) tried to put the ball past MacDonald, but they were unsuccessful. At the 68 minute mark, Lowe and senior Anna Pease (Gorham, ME) tried again, but they were unsuccessful.

MacDonald was outstanding in the cage as she finished the game with seven stops. Junior Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, ME) started for the Huskies and she was not called upon to make a save.

Johnson's two goals this evening gives her the outright team lead with five markers this season.

Both teams will face Little East opponents on Saturday at 2 PM. Worcester State will face conference rival Bridgewater State at home while Southern Maine will entertain Westfield State.
