Lancers Drop Battle to Buccaneers

WORCESTER, MA- After losing their last 2 games against Bridgewater State, the Lancers took a trip to Buzzards Bay to face Massachusetts Maritime Academy in hopes of ending their four game losing streak.

 

In the top of the 1st inning Worcester State loaded the bases and with a walk from senior Chris Ausiello (Tyngsboro, MA) and a two run double from graduate student Sean Devin (Lynn, MA). The Lancers opened the scoring early, taking a 3-0 lead.  Mass Maritime was able to get something going in the bottom of the 2nd inning as RBI singles from Hunter Dean and Chris Perito made it 3-2 early in the game. 

 

This game became a pitcher's duel as senior Cole Glassburn (Hopkinton, MA) shut down Mass Maritime's offense going 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and stricking out 2.  Sam Huffman was able to settle down after allowing 3 runs to Worcester State in the 1st inning, allowing 4 hits, 5 walks and 5 strikeouts.  

 

Senior Ben Smith (Bourne, MA) came into pitch in the bottom of the 7th inning and was able to get through it however in the bottom of the 8th inning with the bases loaded for Mass Maritime, Bill Gorry came off the bench and delivers a 2 RBI single to left field which put the Lancers down 4-3 headed into the top of the 9th inning.  Smith finished his outing pitching 2 innings, allowing 1 hit, 2 runs, walking 3, and striking out 1.  

 

With the Lancers last chance to make a comeback in the top of the 9th inning, they couldn't get it done as Brenden Baiardi struck out the side for Mass Maritime and Worcester State lost the game 4-3.

 

This loss drops the Lancers record to 15-21 and extends their losing streak to 5 games.  Worcester State will come back home and play a doubleheader against Mass Maritime for Senior Day starting at 12pm.
