Lancers Sail to Victory over the Anchormen

Worcester, MA- The Lancers hosted the Anchormen of Rhode Island College earlier tonight in their final non-conference bout of the season. Worcester State made quick work of RIC as they defended their home court well, coming away with an easy 3-0 match sweep.

The evening's opening set got off to an intense start as the score remained close throughout. The momentum finally shifted in the Lancers favor when senior Camryn Burgio (Quincy, Mass.) placed a service ace perfectly in the middle of an Anchormen squad caught on their back heels. It made the score 21-17, and the Lancers expanded that lead to win by a score of 25-18.

The second set saw Worcester State keep their foot on the gas. While they fell behind 2-0 early, once the Lancers took the lead by a score of 3-2, they didn't look back. It was a set that featured a handful of lengthy volleys, but that did not stop the blue and gold from coming away with a 25-21 win and putting them a set away from the match win.

Worcester State commanded the third set, running away easily by a final of 25-14. An early 7-1 lead was quite indicative of things to come, as the Lancers held a definitive lead throughout the set. Captain Camryn Burgio was again at the center of the success with a fantastic service run towards the end of the set cemented the win, and she fittingly finished the night off recording the final point. Junior Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, Mass.) paced the Lancers on the defensive side, leading the team in blocks.

At noon on Saturday, Worcester State will look to round out their season with a win when conference rivals Framingham State visit. The Lancers will head in their final match at 4-2 in the conference and 7-20 overall. The Anchormen head back to Rhode Island with a season record of 7-14.
