Women's Outdoor Track & Field Finishes Second at MASCAC Championships

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's outdoor track & field team finished as the runner up at Sunday's Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Westfield State University.

Six Lancers won MASCAC Individual Championships, as well as one relay team. Seniors Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) and Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.) each won two of the individual championships, and served as legs on the winning 4x100 meter relay team. Mensah was victorious in the long jump with a leap of 5.57 meters, and the triple jump at 10.92 meters. MacGregor won both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes at 12.85 and 26.26 seconds respectively. In the 4x100 meter relay, the duo teamed up with sophomores Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, Mass.) and Maureen Grady for a first place finish at 49.30 seconds.

Two Lancer throwers found themselves atop podiums in their respective events on Sunday, as Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) and Riley Sanderson (Leominster, Mass.) won MASCAC Championships. Konadu won the shot put with a heave of 12.09 meters, while Sanderson claimed the title in the javelin at 36.94 meters.

Behind MacGregor, Worcester State claimed the top three spots in the 100 meter dash, with Mensah placing second at 13.05 seconds, and Pellegrini in third at 13.09. In the 200 meter, the trio made up three of the top four spots, with Pellegrini in second at 26.55 seconds and Mensah in fourth at 27.17 seconds.

Following up Mensah in the long jump was sophomore Maureen Grady (Douglas, Mass.), whose leap of 5.19 meters was good for second. Konadu and senior Shaylee Puleo (Tewksbury, Mass.) each turned in third place finishes in other field events on the afternoon, as Konadu had a toss of 32.02 meters in the discus, while Puleo cleared 2.30 in the pole vault.

The 4x400 meter relay team had a strong showing at the Championships, placing second with a time of 4:27.68. The quartet consisted of Heather Turner (Ashland, Mass.), Grace Higgins (Tewksbury, Mass.), Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.), and Erica Hanlon (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Turner and Clark each turned in third place finishes of their own in individual events, with Turner running the 400 meter dash in 1:04.25 and Clark running the 800 meter in 2:28.62.

Rounding out Worcester State's top-four finishes was senior Kyra Siano (North Attleborough, Mass.), who was third in the 5,000 meter run at 20:22.86.
