History! Men’s Cross Country Captures First MASCAC Championship

DEVENS, Mass. -- The Worcester State University men's cross-country team has won their first ever Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) championship in program history, as the Lancers topped the field of seven teams on Saturday afternoon at Devens Recreational Facility.

A founding member of the MASCAC in 1971, the Lancers broke through this year after placing two runners in the top three overall finishers.

Worcester State was led by Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.), who finished second overall in a field of 69 student-athletes. Carleton got his medal after finishing the 8k course in a time of 26:10.20, just three seconds off of the lead in an exciting sprint to the finish line.

Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.) was on the podium as well, placing third in a time of 26:24.36, while Wayne Carey (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was a top-ten finisher, taking sixth in 27:29.19.

Junior Ethan Goodreau (Spencer, Mass.) delivered 13th place points for the Lancers with a finish of 28:15.98, while Robert Doig (Ashby, Mass.) also scored important points, finishing 25th (29:57.20).

Rounding out the field for the Lancers was Samuel Magee (Salem, Mass.), who was just behind Doig in 26th place, Elias Boone (Littleton, Mass.), who took 39th, Daniel Clark (Worcester, Mass.) in 40th and Colin Brennan (Newbury, Mass.), who finished 46th.

Worcester State won with a combined point score of 49 and a total time of 2:18:16.90. They beat second place Fitchburg State by four points, and were 22 points clear of third place Bridgewater.
