Softball Takes Two From Mass Maritime In Sweep

Worcester, MA --- Senior Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) and freshman Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, MA) both tossed shutouts as they helped lead Worcester State to a 13-0 and 21-0 sweep of Mass Maritime in a pair of games that went five innings this afternoon in MASCAC softball action.

In the opener, the Lancers (14-13, 4-4 MASCAC), senior teammates Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) and Aimee Lamoureux (E. Brookfield, MA) were both 2-for-2 while Kerr scored twice and she drove in four runs.

Junior Hillary Hart (Clinton, MA) helped put the hosts on top 2-0 after the first inning with a two-run single up the middle.

The Blue and Gold then made the score 6-0 after two on a two-run single by Kerr and the first collegiate home-run by senior Kylene Pease (Ashland, MA), who jacked an inside-the-park blast that scored a pair of runs.

Kerr highlighted a four-run third with a triple to the gap in left center and then Pease helped the Lancers plate with a two-run base-knock in a three-run bottom of the fourth.

Everson (3-5) tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts and she only issued one free-pass in her five innings of work.

She stranded senior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, MA) and sophomore Meghan Weir (N. Andover, MA) in scoring position.

Beaulieu (0-9) was dealt the loss in the circle for the Buccaneers. She allowed 13 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits in five frames of action. She also walked six.

In the nightcap, sophomore Katie Storro (Leominster, MA) was 5-for-5 with four runs and four RBIs. Kerr chipped in with a 4-for-5 performance that included five runs driven in while freshman Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, MA) was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Worcester State opened with a four-run bottom of the first as Terry underscored the inning with a two-run saftey.

The Lancers then put up a nine-spot in the second to take advantage several infield miscues. Kerr sparked the hosts with a two-run single before she hammered a two-run triple. Storro also added a single that produced a pair of scores.

WSU put the game away with eight runs over the next two frames.

Rich (7-4) hurled a three-hit shutout as she finished with six punchouts and she walked one batter.

Beaulieu (0-10) was dealt the setback in the second game as she yielded 22 runs (11 earned) on 22 hits to go with one strikeout and two free passes.

Both teams will entertain MASCAC opponents in the next week. Worcester State takes on Framingham State tomorrow at noon while Mass Maritime hosts Bridgewater State at 3:30 on Tuesday.
