Lancers Earn First MASCAC Win Over MCLA, 80-71

Worcester, MA --- Junior forward Brianne Flanders (Northampton, MA) notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebound as Worcester State earned the 80-71 victory this evening over MCLA at Lancer Gymnasium on the first weekend of MASCAC play.

Sophomore Alexis George (Worcester, MA) tallied a game-high 17 points with eight rebounds for WSC (5-8) while she went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Senior Erin McCullough (Harvard, MA) tallied in 13 points while freshman Brittany McGinness (Billerica, MA) added a game-high four steals.

The Trailblazers (8-4) were paced by freshman Alie Dobrovolc’s (Little Falls, NY) nine points while she also pulled down 12 rebounds. Junior Jade Prickett (Westhampton, MA) and senior Larissa Miner (Greenfield, MA) each registered 10 points apiece.

With the game tied 15-15 with 8:50 left in the first half, the Lancers went on a 12-1 run and led 27-16 with 5:15 remaining in the period. Starting from the 4:12 mark, MCLA scored six straight points to hold the Lancers scoreless, close out the half and bring the score to 31-26.

Worcester State built up the lead up to 13 points with 15:31 left (46-33) before the Trailblazers went on an 11-2 run to close the gap to just three points. Neither team scored for another two minutes of play before freshman Molly Hein (Hudson, NH) sank a free throw to give the Lancers a four point lead with 8:31 on the clock (49-45).

MCLA made the score 53-50 with a pair of free throws by junior Laura Silverman (Ballston Lake, NY) with 5:50 left to play, but Worcester State went on a 17-6 run to close out the contest to keep the visitors at bay.

WSC out rebounded the Trailblazers 44-34 with 19 boards coming off of the offensive glass while the Lancer bench also outscored their counterparts 26-11.

Both teams will continue their MASCAC schedule with 5:30 contests on Tuesday. Worcester State will face off against Westfield State on the road while MCLA hosts Salem State.
