Worcester State 59, UMass Dartmouth 44
North Dartmouth, MA --- Visiting Worcester State outscored the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s
basketball team, 37-20 in the second half and went on to a 59-44
victory in a non-conference game at the Tripp Athletic Center
Tuesday evening.
The Lancers, who trailed at halftime, 24-22, got a layup and a
pair of three-pointers from Alexis George
(Worcester, MA) to take a 32-27 lead three and a half minutes into
the second half. Sophomore forward Tashauna
Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA) hit a free throw and a pair of
layups to allow the Corsairs to retake the lead, 34-32, with 12:50
remaining, but Kathleen Foley (Hudson, NH)
sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around Brianne
Flanders’ (Southampton, MA) layup to give WSC a
44-36 advantage with 8:49 remaining.
Junior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA)
contributed a layup and senior forward Vicki
Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA) connected from three-point
range to cut the lead to five points at 46-41, but UMass Dartmouth
could get no closer.
The Corsairs trailed early, but rallied, erasing a 17-8 deficit
with 8:09 left in the first half to take a 24-22 halftime lead. A
16-5 run did the trick, with two free throws by Nelson tying the
score with 1:56 left and Ashmeade’s jumper with 43 seconds to
play in the first half giving UMD its first lead since they had a
2-1 advantage in the opening moments.
“Our goal was to hold them to less than 50 points, which we
were on pace for in the first half,” said UMass Dartmouth
Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. “Reilly
O’Keefe is a prolific shooter, and they hit some three
pointers that were backbreakers when it mattered. I was happy with
the way we started, establishing a post presence, but we missed
some shots that could have made a difference.”
Ashmeade led the Corsairs with 14 points; Andruszkiewicz added 13
and Nelson had 12. O’Keefe led all scorers with 18 points,
and George added 10. Nelson grabbed 11 rebounds, Flanders had nine
and O’Keefe eight as each team finished with 33 rebounds.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-2 with the defeat, while Worcester
State improved to 2-3 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to
action when they host Bridgewater State next Tuesday evening. WSC
will host Trinity next Tuesday.
