Lancers Drop Road Tilt After Wild Third Period

GORHAM, Maine – Worcester State twice came back to tie the game, but fell short of finding a third equalizer as the Lancers fell 5-4 at University of Southern Maine in a non-conference women's ice hockey game on Tuesday afternoon at USM Ice Arena.

Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt.) scored four goals for the Huskies, who improve to 7-6 and dropped the Lancers to 7-5-2.

Emily Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) scored for the second straight game to tie the contest at 2 goals apiece after Southern Maine had scored twice in the first period. Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) pulled a goal back before the end of the period and Pavoni equalized six minutes into the second for Worcester State.

The Huskies got out to a 2-0 lead when senior Riley Binette (Milan, N.H./Berlin) and Chagnon netted first period goals. Chagnon converted a power play opportunity again in the second period to put the Huskies back up 3-2, but Ellen Cook (Becket, Mass) answered right back for the Lancers to tie the game at 3-3 early in the third period. It's the first goal of her Lancer career for Cook, who now has points in each of her first two games with the program.

Chagnon scored two more goals for the Huskies in the third period to open up a 5-3 lead. Katie Puumala (Framingham, Mass) scored late for the Lancers, leading to a frantic last thirty seconds of regulation, but Worcester State was unable to find an equalizer.

Amber Lee (Nashua. N.H.) made 37 saves in net for the Lancers, while Haley McKim (Moncton, NB, Canada) stopped 18 shots for the Huskies.

The Huskies are slated to host Elmira College in a New England Hockey Conference matchup on Friday, January 14 at 6pm.

Worcester is scheduled to take the ice next Tuesday, January 18th when they head to Curry for a 7:00 PM game.
