Lancers Break Even with Rivier in Conference Battle

Worcester, MA - Worcester State Women's Ice hockey tied 2-2 Saturday night away against conference foe Rivier. The Lancers were looking for the first conference win of the season after grabbing their first win earlier this week versus Curry College.

The game was scoreless in the first period as both Rivier and Worcester State battled for the puck back and forth across the crips ice. First year Abby Millman (Georgetown, MA) of Worcester received a penalty for tripping, while Rivier's Grace Arsenault received two. Worcester had 27 shots in the period while Rivier only had 12, yet the Lancers were unable to find the back of the net.

The second period opened up with a Lancer goal by graduate student Katie Puumala (Framingham, MA) from first year Fiona Hatton (Homer, Ak). Lancer goalie first year Lana Pacific (Marlborough, MA) had several vital saves for her team as Rivier amped up their offensive attack. They retaliated in the 8th minute when Briana Rumptz scored off a pass from Jaclyn Puumala, tying up the game 1-1. In the final minute of the period Worcester had 10 shots but none of them were successful for a goal.

Worcester scored again early in the third period, this time unassisted by junior Kiersten Erickson (Broomfield, CO) in the third period 3 minutes in. A minute later Rebecca Mckelvey of Rivier scored an unassisted goal to tie up the game. Worcester continued to dominate the attack and kept the pressure high on Rivier's defense. Rivier had a few shots that missed or went wide, but nothing substantial as the Lancer defense was on lock.

The game went into overtime and multiple shot opportunities were attempted but neither team was able to score and the game ended in a tie even though Worcester outshot Rivier 50-30.

The Lancers (1-2-1, 0-1-1) look for a win in their next game when they face off again versus Rivier on Wednesday November 15th at 4pm.
