Macomber, Lathrop Pace Women's Soccer In Victory Over Rhode Island College

Worcester, MA --- Junior Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA) notched her first career hat-trick and senior Sarina Lathrop (Hopedale, MA) finished with three helpers as Worcester State defeated Rhode Island College, 9-0, in non-conference women's soccer action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

The Lancers (2-1) staked the 1-0 margin at the intermission when senior Margo Clifford (Attleboro, MA) unleashed a bullet from the left side of the box, following a middle pass from classmate Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT).

To start off the second period, Macomber found the back of the net twice in a span of 79 seconds to help put the Blue and Gold ahead 3-0 as Lathrop hit her with a perfect pass in the middle of the box both times from the left side of the field.

Macomber turned the trick in the 57th minute after senior Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, MA) fed her the ball from the right side of the baseline.

Five different goal scorers underscored the Lancers in the final 30 minutes of game play as senior Cassie Giardina (Pittsfield, MA) started the rally with an unassisted tally in the 65th minute. Archer netted her first of the campaign in the 78th minute and sophomore Kendal Bergenholtz (Grafton, MA) was aided by Lathrop off of a corner kick 10 minutes later.

Sophomore teammates Briana Moreno (Lynn, MA) and Sarah Kane (Sutton, MA) netted their first collegiate goals in the waning moments of the contest.

The Anchorwomen (1-2) managed to finish the contest with seven shots including a bid by junior Charissa Champagne (N. Providence, RI) in the 22nd minute that WSU junior net minder Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) turned aside for her only save of the contest.

Senior Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) collected seven stops over the first 56 minutes of the game before giving way to classmate Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) who recorded five saves for RIC.

The Lancers also ended the game leading in corners, 7-0.

Both squads travel to non-conference opponents in the next week. Worcester State heads to WPI for a 7 PM matchup on Wednesday while the Anchorwomen travel south to Newport to take on Salve Regina on Tuesday at 4 o'clock.
