Worcester State Honors Class of 2021 at Senior Athlete Celebration

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University Department of Athletics honored its Class of 2021 on Monday evening in a new-look end of year celebration at John P. Brissette Court.

Due to COVID-19 regulations and protocols, only members of the Class of 2021 and their coaches were invited to the event.

Barry Maloney, President of Worcester State University, and Michael Mudd, Director of Athletics, gave opening remarks at the beginning of the ceremony.

"Everyone on our campus was impacted in some way by the COVID-19 pandemic, but perhaps no one shined brighter than our student-athletes," said Maloney. "I am so impressed by the accomplishments of this senior class and I am beyond proud."

“I want to thank you for your flexibility, diligence, and resilience in following the various COVID-19 protocols. It was not easy and it was not deserved, but it had to be done to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” Mudd said, addressing the seniors. “I hope you have had a great experience at Worcester State. It has been a pleasure being your athletic director.”

Thirty Worcester State Chi Alpha Sigma Athlete Honor Society inductees, whose names are listed below, were presented with cords to be worn at Commencement. To be eligible for Chi Alpha Sigma, graduating seniors needed to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.40.

Seven Lancers were named recipients of the Margaret “Peg” Nugent Scholar Athlete Award, the highest honor bestowed upon Worcester State senior student-athletes. Women’s tennis’ Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.), field hockey’s Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.), women’s lacrosse’s Lauren Arbec (Fairhaven, Mass.), baseball’s Pat Galvin (Shrewsbury, Mass.), men’s ice hockey’s Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich.), women’s track & field’s Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.), and men’s track & field’s Hoang Vo (Worcester, Mass.) were named recipients of the prestigious honor.
