Don Howard '51
Title: Class of 2005

Prior to attending Worcester State, Don Howard was an outstanding athlete at South High School.  After serving in the United States Army during World War II, he enlisted at Worcester State under the GI Bill.  Don was a four year starter on the men's basketball team from 1948 through 1951 as well as an officer in the Men's Athletic Association.  He was elected co-captain of the team for the 1950 and 1951 seasons.  Don led the team in scoring during the 1949-50 season scoring 241 points for a 13.8 points per game average.  He also played one season on the newly formed varsity baseball team in 1950. 

Don went on to become a teacher in the Worcester Public school system coaching baseball, basketball and football wile at the elementary and junior high school levels.  In 1965, he began his administrative career serving as the assistant principal at South High School.  He went on to serve as the Director of Professional Personnel for the Worcester Public Schools from 1968 through 1978.  Prior to his retirement in 1992, Don was a Labor Relations Consultant for the Massachusetts Teachers Association. 

He has a M.Ed. from Worcester State Teachers College and in 1957 received his law degree from Suffolk University Law School.  A Lancer through and through, Don remains active with Worcester State serving  in positions on the Alumni Advisory Board as well as the Executive Committee.  He is a class agent for the Class of 1951 and this fall will begin serving on the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. 

He is married to Worcester State graduate Mary Jane Harvey, Class of 1953, and has three children and four grandchildren.  It is with great pleasure that we induct Don Howard into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
