Berkel and Santos Headline MASCAC Basketball Rookie of the Week Accolades

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University’s freshman guard, Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) and freshman forward, Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) headlined the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Basketball Rookie of the Week Accolades for the week of Jan. 4-10.

 

Men’s Basketball:

Santos was named the MASCAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for his performance in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. This is Santos’ fourth time (third-consecutive) time earning this award.

 

This past week, Santos averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 assists and two rebounds.

 

He scored 12 points with five assists in the 77-61 victory over MCLA in the MASCAC season opener. He then finished with a team-high 21 points and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals in the 94-83 setback to Salem State on Saturday.

 

This week, Santos went a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line and shot 38.9% from behind the 3-point line.

 
 

Women’s Basketball:

Berkel was named the MASCAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for her role in a 1-2 week for the Lancers. This is Berkel’s third time this season earning this honor.

 

Berkel averaged 11.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and two blocks and two assists this past week.

 

She registered a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Suffolk on Monday. She then was one rebound shy of a double-double in Wednesday’s MASCAC opener against MCLA, netting 11 points and nine rebounds with the addition of three assists and two steals. In Saturday's setback to Salem State, she recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds.

 

Overall, Berkel shot 34.4 percent from the field and 66.7 from the line.

 


Honor Roll:

Junior guard, Bilal Shakir (Worcester, Mass.) averaged 17.5 points, five assists, and three steals in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. He netted a game-high 21 points in the 77-61 win over MCLA and registered 14 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in the 94-83 setback to Salem State.
