Baseball Falls, 5-1, to Heidelberg

The Worcester State College baseball team fell this morning to Heidelberg College by the final score of, 5-2, at Port Charlotte High School. Worcester State drops to 2-4 on the year, while Heidelberg improves to 8-2.

It was a pitcher’s duel through the first three innings as Worcester State starter Craig McBride (Attleboro, MA) and Heidelberg’s Branden Stuckey were both strong on the hill.

Worcester State broke through first when senior Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) launched his first homerun of the year over the left field fence to give the Lancers a, 1-0, lead.

Heidelberg answered back in the top of the 5th inning with a three spot. Tony Pawlowicz and Derek Andrzejczak both walked to open the frame and moved up on a wild pitch. With one out, Jason Lash rapped a 2-run single to give Heidelberg a, 2-1, lead. Lash took second on the throw and moved over to third on an infield error by the Lancers. L.B. Emrheim drove home Lash with the third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.

Heidelberg added a single run in the 6th inning when Pawlowicz hit a sacrifice fly driving home Jeremy Wentworth.

The Lancers scored their final in the bottom of the inning when Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA) singled home Matt Hart (Easton, MA) who reached on an error.

Heidelberg tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 9th when Wentworth singled to left and promptly stole second base. Gar Keen doubled home Wentworth with a shot into the gap.

McBride took the loss for Worcester State. Stucky go this first win of the year and Steve Calevro got a save in a strong relief effort.
