Wisconsin-Stevens Point 12, Worcester State 4
North Port, FL – The Worcester State College baseball team
lost to the 11th ranked Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Thursday afternoon by the final score of, 12-4, at North Port High
School. The loss drops the Lancers to 3-7 on the year while the
Pointers improve to 5-4.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point batted around in the top of the first
inning. Justin Bushong led off the top of the 1st
inning with a solo blast over the right field fence to give the
Pointers a, 1-0, lead. Second baseman Tim
Schlosser followed with a double into the right center
gap. Brad Frank ripped a single past the third
basemen to set up Wisconsin-Stevens Point with first and third with
nobody out. Leftfielder Jared Surman was hit by a
pitch to load the bases and was followed by a RBI single to left by
Bandon Scheidler to plate Frank. Stevens-Point continued to play
station to station as the catcher Ben Warwick
plated Doug Coe with a single to left. A sacrifice
fly by Brad Archambeau scored Surman with the 5th
run of the game. Bushong legged out an infield hit to reload the
bases and Schlosser rapped his second double of the inning scoring
a pair of runs to give Stevens-Point a, 7-0, lead after a half
inning.
In the top of the 6th with freshman Tom Brown
(Boylston, MA) on the hill, Bushong led off the frame with a single
up the middle. Schlosser followed with a single down the left field
line to give Stevens-Point runners at first and second. After Frank
reached on a fielder’s choice, Coe doubled home Bushong.
Surman followed with a double of his own driving in a pair of
Pointers giving them a, 10-0, lead.
With one out in the top of the 7th, pinch hitter Sam
Spurney reached second on a dropped ball down the right
field line. He was promptly tripled home by pinch hitter
Eric Fritz. Fritz scored on a sacrifice fly by
Schlosser to give the Pointers a, 12-0, lead.
Worcester State got on the board in the bottom of the 7th. They
loaded the bases when Nate Nelson (Worcester, MA)
led off with a single and Mike Moffett (Lowell,
MA) and pinch hitter Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA)
walked. Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA) hit an RBI
single up the middle to drive in the first Lancer runs of the
game.
Worcester State added 2 more in the bottom of the 9th when they
loaded the bases once again on singles by Moffett, Hawley and
Abbascia. Matt Hart (Easton, MA) singled down the
left field line to dive in a run. Peter Ferrelli
(Milford, MA) drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to left
scoring Hawley.
After the rough start, Joey Lucier (Brockton, MA)
took the loss despite settling down tossing 4 straight innings of
scoreless ball before being lifted after 5 innings. Stevens Point
starter Garret Nix went 8 strong innings giving up 2 runs while
striking out 8 to get his second win of the year.
Stevens Point knocked out 19 hits getting 3 each from Bushon,
Schlosser and Coe. Worcester State got a three hit day from
Abbascia.
