Worcester State 10, UMass Boston 6
Worcester, MA – The Worcester State baseball team fell to
the UMass-Boston Beacons Thursday afternoon by the final tally of,
10-6, in a game played at Assumption College. The loss drops the
Lancers to 6-10 on the year, while the Beacons improve to 8-11.
The Beacons batted around in the top of the third inning scoring
six runs. Centerfielder Jake Chastain (Northfield,
MA) led off with a walk and moved to third on a double by right
fielder Tom Michael (Manchester, NH). After
Eric Salvador (Middleboro, MA) was hit by a pitch
to load the bases, first baseman Danny Arenas
(Fort Lauderdale, FL) doubled home Michael and Chastain to give the
Beacons a, 2-0, lead. Shortstop Ryan Walsh
(Newton, MA) followed with a single up the middle to plate two more
scoring Arenas and Salvador. After G.P.
O’Kane (Easton, MA) doubled down the left field line
Charlie Peters (Burbank, CA) squeezed home Walsh
from third with the fifth Beacon run. Ryan Oshima
(La Jolla, CA) drove in the final run of the frame with a single to
right field.
The Lancers found the scoring column in the bottom of the 4th when
freshman Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA) scored on
a fielder’s choice after leading off the inning getting hit
by a pitch.
UMass-Boston tacked on three more in the top of the 5th. Walsh and
left fielder Peters singled. Oshima followed with an RBI double.
With two out Michael singled through the left side to score Peters
and Oshima giving the Beacons a, 9-1, lead.
The Lancers fought back in the bottom of the 5th frame with a two
out rally that scored four 4 runs. After Chris
Gusha (Rutland, MA) reached on a fielder’s choice
and Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA) was hit by a
pitch, Abbascia singled to left center scoring Gusha. Ryan
Raleigh (Cranston, RI) followed with a double diving in
Abbascia and Caparell. Nick Fluegge (Ware, MA)
then scored Raleigh with a single to right field making the score,
9-5.
The Beacons added a single run in the top of the 6th when Walsh
blasted a two out home run over the left field fence to give
UMass-Boston a, 10-5, advantage.
In the bottom of the 6th, Nate Nelson (Worcester,
MA) legged out a triple after a blast off the left center field
wall. Caparell followed with a single up the middle scoring Nelson
to reset the score at, 10-6.
Fluegge and Nelson led the Lancers with Fluegge getting three hits
on the day and Nelson with a pair. UMass-Boston had two players
with three hits each as Michael and Walsh both had solid games.
Pat Good (Hull, MA) took the loss for the Lancers
as he falls to 1-1 on the year. UMass-Boston pitcher Mike
Cain (Gloucester, MA) remains perfect on the season at
4-0.
