Box Score

W. New Haven, CT --- Worcester State blasted five home runs en route to a 23-1 win over Albertus Magnus in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at historic Quigley Stadium. The Lancers, winners of six straight, improve to 7-3-1 while the Falcons slip to 2-10.

WSC pounded away at 19 hits, nine of which went for extra bases. Every starter reached first base with a hit as they were propelled by junior teammates Nick Fluegge (Ware, MA) and Tyler McElman (Marlboro, MA) who both went 4-for-6 with three trips to home plate.

Worcester State scored seven runs over the first three innings as they were highlighted by a three-run homer by third-year Johno Hinkell (N. Adams, MA) in the opening frame and a solo shot by senior Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA).

The Blue and Gold would then erupt and score 13 runs in the games middle frames. McElman helped power the offense with a two-run single in the fourth, a solo dinger in the fifth and a two-RBI double in the sixth. Flugge also hammered on a two-run homer in the fifth and freshman Nick Gezotis (Westfield, MA) knocked out a lead-off number in the sixth for his first career homer.

From the seventh inning on the Falcons hurlers would blank the Lancers for the rest of the game.

Albertus Magnus mustered seven six hits as they were led by fourth-year Peter Rogan’s (Middletown, CT) 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Magnus scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth to break the shutout.

Senior BJ Senna (Wallingford, CT) notched a two-out single and moved to second on a misplayed ball in the outfield. Rogan would then drive in Senna in the next at-bat, but he would end the inning one batter later as Rogan tried to score from first on a double to right by freshman Malcom Mendez (Lower East Side, NY).

Junior right hander Bobby DeVito (Webster, MA) earned his second victory of the year as he tossed six scoreless innings. DeVito yielded just three hits while he fanned six and did not walk one batter.

DeVito was finished off by freshman lefthander Chris Creen (Worcester, MA/St. John’s) who hurled the final three frames to pick up his first career save. Creen allowed three hits and one unearned rune. Creen issued one free pass and he collected three punchouts.

The Falcon bullpen had a busy day as they were forced to use six pitchers. Senior righty Brendan Hickey (Salisbury, CT) was saddled with the loss as his record drops to 0-2 on the year. Albertus Magnus pitching gave up 13 walks as they also struck out four batters.

The Lancers continue their non-league schedule tomorrow with a 3:30 game against WPI as they will be the home team. The Falcons start GNAC play when they travel to Emerson for a twinbill contest at Malden Catholic on Saturday before they entertain Rivier in a double-header on Sunday.
