Baseball Falls To Salem State, 6-0, In MASCAC Quarterfinals

2015 MASCAC Baseball Tournament Bracket

Salem, MA --- Salem State sophomore Andrew Deloury (Andover, MA) belted a pair of home runs and classmate Mike Richardson (Belmont, MA) tossed seven scoreless frames to help pace the second-seeded Vikings to a 6-0 victory over #3 Worcester State in the quarterfinals of the MASCAC Baseball Tournament.

The Lancers (24-15) will try to stave off elimination tomorrow at 9:30 AM in the loser's bracket game against top-seeded Mass Maritime in Buzzards Bay. Salem State and #4 Framingham State will play in the 1 PM contest tomorrow at Mass Maritime.

The Rams doubled up the Buccaneers, 6-3, earlier today in the other quarterfinal matchup.

Ahead 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Deloury crushed a two-run homer to put the Vikings ahead by five scores before he smacked a solo dinger in the bottom of the sixth.

Salem State originally staked the 1-0 lead on an RBI triple by senior Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, MA) in the second.

Freshman Dan Connors (Danvers, MA) and sophomore Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, MA) followed in the bottom of the third by helping the hosts take advantage of an infield miscue by plating a pair of unearned tallies.

The best chance for Worcester State came in the top of the sixth against a tiring Richardson. With a runner on first and two outs, senior Jeff Bolio (Oxford, MA) and sophomore Mike Powers (Weymouth, MA) juiced the bases on consecutive singles. But Richardson induced a ground out to end the threat.

Richardson hurled a scoreless seventh and gave way to junior Pete Gonski (E. Lyme, MA) who slammed the door with a hitless eighth and ninth inning. In total, Richardson scattered eight hits and fanned two while walking one.

Senior Kris Doyle (Millbury, MA) went the distance for the sixth time this season and he absorbed the loss for the Lancers. Doyle (3-4) permitted six runs (four earned) on nine hits to go with five strikeouts and three free passes.

Senior Zach George (Attleboro, MA) propelled an eight-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with a trio of solo knocks. He moved into eighth on the all-time singles list as he now has 103 in his career.
