Lancers and Falcons Split MASCAC Baseball Doubleheader

Worcester, Mass. –  The Worcester State Lancer and Fitchburg State Falcon baseball fields split a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Lyons Diamond.  The Lancers took Game 1 by the final score of, 5-3, while Fitchburg State took home the second game, 7-4.  Worcester State now holds a 17-12 overall record and an 11-4 conference mark which currently places them in a second-place tie in the MASCAC.  Fitchburg State is now -27 overall and 3-12 in MASCAC action.

In game 1, Fitchburg State jumped out to a, 1-0 lead after the first after More house doubles and was driven home by Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) on a single to right field.

The Lancers answered in the 4th inning which proved to be the decisive frame.  Tom Halliwell (Leominster, Mass.) singled to right center driving home Chris Wright (Jefferson, Mass.) and Tom DiBattista (Hudson, Mass.).   After Mike Chaves, Jr. (Hudson, Mass.) got on base after being hit by a pitch, Sean Devin (Lynn, Mass.) ripped a two-run double to right center to give the Lancers a, 4-1, lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

Offensively, Worcester State was paced by Halliwell and Devin who each had two hits and two RBI along with Anthony Iamarone (Providence R.I.) who was 2 for 3 on the game.  Fitchburg State as led by Aramo who was 3 for 4.

Jarret Morrill (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the game one victory going 6 innings and scattering 7 hits.  Matthew Ambrosino (Bradenton, Fla.) took the loss for the Falcons.

In game 2, the Falcons scored in 5 of 7 innings and had the lead throughout.

Fitchburg plated a pair in the top of the first inning.  Connor Morehouse (Weatherby Lake, MO) scored the first run from third on a double steal and Eramo crossed the plate for the second Falcon run on an RBI single from Zachary Morris (Salem, N.H.).

After scoring single runs in the 3rd and 4th inning; Fitchburg scored the game winner in the top of the 5th inning.  With two outs, Richard Sharp who led of the inning getting aboard via the hit by pitch scored from third on the second double steal of the day for Fitchburg.  That was followed by an RBI single Liam Goldstein (Charlestown, R.I.) to push the Falcon advantage to. 6-2.

Worcester State was never able to muster a rally in the nightcap.  Worcester State was held to 5 hits by 5 different players.

Lancer hurler Justin Pena (Mansfield, Mass.) took the loss while reliever Jovanni Merced (Springfield, Mass.) got the victory.

Worcester State will return to the diamond on Friday when they travel to Bridgewater State for a MASCAC doubleheader.  Fitchburg will host MCLA in a single 9 inning game on Friday afternoon.
