Lancers Fall to Rams in Late Inning Slug Match

Lancers Fall to Rams in Late Inning Slug Match

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Baseball team (5-16, 4-5) returned back to Kevin D. Lyons Diamond to take on the Framingham State Rams (7-12, 5-3) in the final game of the regular season three game series. This game was initially scheduled for last Friday, but thanks to the typical end of week rain this season the games and locations were flipped around. This game would again see the Lancers host the game but being playing as the away team on the field.

Final

Framingham State: 17

Worcester State: 10

How it Happened:

Worcester would open up the game going down 1, 2, 3, as they looked to get themselves back on the winning track in their return home. The Rams would see the top of their order go 3-3 and continue to rally, raking up four runs in the opening bottom inning of the game.

Senior Frankie Herandez (Framingham, MA) would kick things off for the Lancers in the fourth spot and not hesitate, drilling a solo shot deep in right-center field to get the Lancers on the board and make it 4-1. Worcester would be unable to generate any additional offense that inning, going down in the next three at-bats.

The next inning would open up with a strike by first year Franklin Sierra (Boston, MA) getting two quick strikes. The bats of Framingham would remain hot and they would maintain their 4-run lead with an additional run in the second and a quiet third inning for both teams would see that difference carry into the fourth.

The top of the fourth would see Hernandez record a deep double into right field after hitting the sweet spot of his bat once again. He would find his way home after sophomore Gavin Wells (North Attleboro, MA) would drill a ball to short that would see an out but also the additional run for Worcester. Wells would attempt to get a run in of his own from first on a Jeremy DeLacruz deep drive but would be tagged out sliding into home for the final out of the inning.

The Rams would work Sierra to load up the bases in the bottom of the inning, grabbing three runs before a pitching change would see senior Danny DiMassimo (Pittsfield, MA) onto the mound. He would work to grab the needed out to end the inning, but the Rams would force two more runs across to take a 10-2 lead into the fifth. The Lancers would go down 1,2,3 for the second time in the contest against the Rams allowing Framingham to attempt to continue to build offensively, but DiMassimo was tactical, forcing balls into play for quick outs and shutting down the Rams endeavors.

Top of the sixth would have Worcester grabbing two runs back when first-year Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) would send a ball deep for a sacrifice fly that would send home junior Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI) and sophomore Joe Auger (Lowell, MA) would find his way across the plate for un number four off an error by the Rams third baseman in his attempt to collect a Jeremy DeLacruz (Lowell, MA) single right down the line. DiMassimo and the Lancer's defense made solid work in the bottom of the inning forcing the Rams down without threat.

The top of the 7th would see the top of the Lancers order get another chance to do some damage. The duo of  Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) and Halliwell would get in scoring positions and be brought home by Iamarone after his hit to center field was carried to the warning track. That spurt of scoring was all the Lancers were able to send across the plate during their at bats and a score 6-10 would be the scoreline. The bottom of the inning would have the Rams loading the bases with only one out and would eventually bring in two after slotting a line drive past DelaCruz. Two more runs would come through off of sac flies with runners on third base and a 14-6 score into the eighth.

The top of the eighth would see the Rams make three quick outs after an improbable double play after the Ram's first basemen made a leaping line drive catch and scurried to touch first to complete the play. The bottom of the inning would see the Rams extend their lead with a solo shot home run and continue to extend it with another two additional runs to see the score set at 17-6 in the ninth.

The inning would open up with the Lancers scoring a run off a Hernandez RBI. Down 10 needing to score a decade of runs to keep the game alive it would have been an impressive task coming back in the contest that Worcester looked up to the task of. Jewett would bring in Iamarone with a single to right field. Two more runs would be brought in from DeLacruz and first year Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA) making the scoreline 10-17 but Worcester's tank would empty after an impressive onslaught dropping the game to Framingham 17-10.
