Field Hockey Snaps Skid With 1-0 Triumph Over Western Connecticut

Danbury, CT --- Senior Sarah Cozzens (Lancaster, MA) scored the lone goal to lift visiting Worcester State to a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut State in field hockey action at The WAC on Tuesday night.

Cozzens' goal was her 12th of the season and she is in second place in the Little East Conference, three goals behind Fitchburg State University's Megan Jacobs who came into Tuesday with 15 markers.

The Lancers, 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the league, got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute when senior Samantha Janda (Sterling, MA) found Cozzens wide open on the left side at the top of the arc. Cozzens' shot went untouched to the backboard. It was Janda's fifth assist on the year.

Junior Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, MA) earned the victory in the cage for Worcester State. She made six saves.

Freshman Alyssa Picariello (Montrose, NY) made four saves for the Colonials, now 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the LEC. Third year Cristina Luis (Danbury, CT) and senior Kimberly Hahn (Ramsey, NJ) were credited with two stellar defensive saves after a flurry in front of the cage by Janda, midway through the second half.

The Blue and Gold held an 11-2 lead in shots in the first half before they were shut down in the second stanza and actually outshot 11-5. Both squads were even in penalty corners, 4-4.

WSU has equalled their win total from a season ago when they finished 7-11.

Cozzens also moves into 10th place on WSU's All-Time scoring list as she has totalled 24 goals and nine helpers for a total of 57 points. She passed Lancer Hall of Famer Alice Goulet (1972-74). With 12 markers, Cozzens is now just four away from tying the single season mark of 16 held by four former players.

WestConn, which has now dropped two straight after a four-game win streak, plays host to Bridgewater State  this Saturday at 4 PM. The Lancers will play Keene State at 11 AM at home in a key LEC match-up on Saturday.
