Worcester State Blanks Fitchburg State, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University field hockey team blanked the visiting Sterling Cup opponents, Fitchburg State, 3-0 in Saturday morning's Little East Conference (LEC) matchup at John Coughlin Memorial Field.

 
 

With the win, the Lancers extend their winnign streak to four and improve to 9-4 overall, and 6-1 in the LEC, while Fitchburg State drops to 6-4 and 4-4 in conference play.

 
 

After a slow start, Worcester State came away with the 1-0 advantage going into the intermission as sophomore Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) scored the Lancers' first goal of the game in the 32nd minute on an assist from senior forward Kayla Quinn (Sutton, Mass.).

 
 

The Lancers maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the first half as they outshot Fitchburg State 8-2 and acquired seven penalty corners in comparison to one for the Falcons.

 
 

The Lancers struck again in the 53rd minute when Hayley Sutherland (Tewskbury, Mass.) fired the ball into the circle from 30 yards out central. Freshman forward Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) flicked the ball past Fitchburg's keeper, Brittany Linane (Portsmouth, N.H.) giving the Blue and Gold their second goal of the game.

 
 

Worcester State put the icing on the cake in the 67th minute when Sutherland drilled a penalty shot into the top left corner of the cage, resulting in the 3-0 win for the Lancers.

 
 

Worcester State's junior goalkeeper, Kathryn Salemme (Acton, Mass.) registered her second shutout of the year as she marked fives saves in the 70 minutes. Fitchburg State's Linane (6-4) suffered her fourth loss of the season as she tallied seven saves in the contest.

 
 

The Lancers return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 11) when they host Becker College in a non-conference matchup. The Falcons also resume play then when they travel to Western Connecticut for a LEC contest.
