FIELD HOCKEY PROVES TOO MUCH FOR SPRINGFIELD

The Worcester State Field Hockey team beat Springfield College on Thursday night at Coughlin Field.

In the 6th minute of the contest, Emily Floury (Warren, MA) sprung on a partial breakaway. Floury was hauled down by a Springfield defender and then awarded a penalty stroke. Floury fired the shot past the low stick-side of first year Springfield goalkeeper, Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on Hudson, NY).

Worcester State would strike again in the 11th minute of play. The scoring play was set up when senior forward Hope Makey (Clinton, MA) fired a shot. which was blocked by Springfield's senior defender, Sydney Harris (Longmeadow, MA). Makey applied quick pressure on the defender, forcing a turnover and a quick pass to Worcester's junior midfielder, Molly Cutting (Auburn, MA). Cutting worked her way towards the goal, sliding a quick centering feed to senior midfielder, Julia Martinelli (Auburn, MA). Martinelli chipped a shot just over the stick of DeLasho to put the Lancers up 2-0.

Springfield would answer back three minutes later as junior midfielder, Grave Levansavich (Auburn, MA) slid a pass through two Worcester defenders finding sophomore forward, Aidan Bourbonnais (Southwick, MA) filling the middle lane. Bourbonnais released a one-touch redirect shot through the legs of Worcester's sophomore goalkeeper, Sam Gastonguay (Somerset, MA) to cut the lead in half.

The majority of the second quarter remained scoreless, until the final minute of the first half. Springfield's Bourbannais took a penalty corner, passing the ball to junior midfielder, Carly Torrance (Concord, NH). Torrance found a cutting Audrey Dolan (Westminster, MA), who one-touched a shot on the left side of the net, beating Gastonguay to tie the game.

The game remained at a 2-2 deadlock until the 47th minute of play, when Lancer senior defender, Ann Maher (Mansfield, MA) slid through a couple of Springfield attackers and sent a lead pass out into space in front of Floury. Floury won a footrace to the ball and broke free just beyond the Springfield 25 yard line. Floury chipped a shot over the stick of DeLasho to put the Lancers up by one.

Springfield made final attempts to tie the game, but first year goalkeeper, Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) came up with two big saves in the final minutes to seal the win for the Lancers.

The Lancers improved to 3-0 on the win, while Springfield fell to 2-1. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, September 11th for LEC action vs Salem State at 4:00pm.
