Field Hockey Finishes Atop LEC Preseason Coaches' Poll

2021 Little East Conference Field Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  - The Worcester State University field hockey team has been selected to the top spot in the Little East Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league on Friday afternoon.

The Lancers, who won their first LEC Championship in 2019 and enter the 2021 season as reigning champions after their 2020 season was cancelled, received eight of the 13 first place votes to finish in first place with 138 points. In second was Keene State with 125 points and two first place votes. The two teams met in the LEC Championship in 2019, with the Lancers picking up a resounding 6-0 victory at Coughlin Field.

The final three first place votes all went to third place finisher Western Connecticut, who secured 102 points. In fourth, and only four points behind Western Connecticut, was Southern Maine, followed closely by Castleton and Plymouth State in fifth and sixth respectively.

The Lancers were the top team in the poll of the MASCAC core members, who like Worcester State are all affiliate members of the LEC for field hockey. Salem State finished seventh, Westfield State ninth, Bridgewater State 10th, Framingham State 12th, and Fitchburg State 13th.

Worcester State will begin its title defense with a non-conference battle against Anna Maria on September 2. Start time from Paxton is slated for 4 p.m.
