Westfield State 74, Worcester State 65
Westfield, MA --- Senior guard Dave Jaehnig
(Quincy, MA) had team highs of 16 points, eight rebounds and four
assists to lead Westfield State to a 74-65 victory over Worcester
State in MASCAC action this evening.
Westfield upped its record to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the
conference. Worcester State is 7-7 and 1-1.
The score was tied 30-all at halftime and 41-41 with 13:59
remaining when the Owls began to assume control. Westfield led the
final 13 minutes and took its biggest lead, 65-54, with 4:46
remaining following five straight points by Jaehnig.
Worcester cut the deficit to five, 65-60, with 3:04 remaining, but
Westfield iced the victory with several free throws and two
breakaway layups by Brandon Mauer (Pittsfield,
MA), who finished with 13 points.
Westfield’s other player in double figures was junior forward
Drew Pereira (Seekonk, MA) with 14 points.
The Owls again shot well from the field (55 percent) while
Worcester shot 43 percent. Most of the other box score statistics
were fairly even. Senior forward Johnny Dunbar
(Roxbury, MA) played a fine game with a game-high six steals, seven
points and four rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
Junior forward Maurice Horton (Detroit, MI) posted
game highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds with four assists. Horton
entered the game averaging a conference-high 25.8 points per game.
Patrick Hamilton (Templeton, MA), Elijah
Sims (Worcester, MA), Kevin Gena (Lynn,
MA) and Dave Douilette (Bridgewater, MA) each
scored eight pointswhile Hamilton corralled seven rebounds.
Worcester State will hit the hardwood again when it entertains Framingham State this Saturday. The tip-off is slated for 5 o'clock.
