Worcester State men’s basketball coach Dave
Lindberg was sitting on his couch watching last
year’s season-opening Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on ESPN and
he got to thinking — why not do something similar on the
local level?
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to raise money and awareness as well as being an educational experience for our guys,” Lindberg said.
After a year of planning, Worcester State will host its Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Lancer Gymnasium. Colby-Sawyer, Elms and Buffalo State are also playing.
On Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn, the teams will come together for a banquet featuring speakers from the locally based 15-40 Connection. The mission of the 15-40 Connection, founded by Jim Coghlin, is to create awareness that cancer is the No. 1 disease-related cause of death for 15-40-year-olds and to promote early detection through advocacy and awareness.
Participants will also watch Jim Valvano’s famous “Don’t ever give up” speech.
Each of the four teams did fundraising. Worcester State players solicited $1 donations during the high school state tournaments and high school Super Bowl games played at Worcester State. Lindberg estimates his team has raised $5,000. Proceeds will go to the 15-40 Connection.
