Worcester, MA --- Jeff Santora and Bob
Bruso were Southern Worcester County League foes in high
school and MASCAC opponents in college, but for the second straight
year, they will team up in the Walter Cosgrove Four-Ball at Green
Hill GC.
The annual event, which brings out some of the area’s best
golfers, is Saturday and Sunday.
Santora, a Millbury resident and recent graduate of Salem State,
and Bruso, who lives in Auburn and will be a senior at Worcester
State, finished in a four-way tie for third place in last
year’s tournament.
“We figured, why not try it again?” Santora said.
Santora capped an excellent career at Salem State by winning the
Howard C. Smith Award as the MASCAC’s Male Scholar-Athlete of
the Year. He was named an All-American as a junior and won the 2009
Guy Tedesco Award, given to the top collegiate golfer in New
England.
Bruso has likewise enjoyed success at Worcester State. This year,
he won the Lancers’ last three tournaments of the spring and
became the first WSC golfer in 26 years to earn All-America
recognition.
Santora, who works at Pleasant Valley CC, and Bruso, who works at
Blackstone National GC, tied for medalist honors at this
year’s MASCAC Championships.
Santora and Bruso shared the lead after the first round of last
year’s Cosgrove tourney, but finished four shots behind
winners Paul Couture and L.J.
Tosches, who will be back to defend their title.
“It’s one of the best team tournaments in the area,
and you get the best from around here that play in it,” Bruso
said. “It’s competitive, and if you play well,
it’s a good way to get your name out there.”
Green Hill head pro Matt Moison said he has about
100 teams entered in this year’s event, including 2008 champs
David Jones and Brian Bardier,
Frank Vana and R.J. Foley, Dan
and Dave Falcucci, Tim
Mooradian and Brian Higgns, Jim
Ruschioni and Carter Fasick,
John and Kevin Cosgrove, and
Billy Cosgrove and Chris
Quinn.
Vana and Foley were last year’s runners-up.
“Any time Vana is in a tournament, you know it’s a
good one,” Santora said of the eight-time MGA Player of the
Year.
On Saturday morning, Green Hill will dedicate its beautifully
remodeled clubhouse as the Walter Cosgrove Clubhouse. Members of
the Cosgrove family will be on hand for the ceremony.
“We’re looking forward to a good event as
always,” Moison said.
