Wentworth 9, Worcester State 4
Fitchburg, MA --- Wentworth Institute of Technology opened the
2009 IC Credit Union Shootout with high scoring action, defeating
Worcester State, 9-4 at the Wallace Civic Center on the campus of
Fitchburg State College.
Wentworth (3-0) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as it
battles Fitchburg State for the IC Credit Union Shootout
Championship at 4 PM Worcester State (0-1) will face Assumption
tomorrow at 1 PM in the Consolation game.
Wentworth sophomore Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, CA) led all
scorers posting three goals for a hat-trick while sophomore Alan
Dionne (N. Scituate, RI) added three points with one goal and two
assists. Rookie Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, CA) was also solid for
the Leopards with one goal and one helper, while senior
Mark Rintel (Oakland Gardens, NY) added a score
and a dish for the Lancers.
The tournament scoring opened midway through the first period as
both teams combined for three goals over a 1:35 span. Wentworth
grabbed an early 2-1 lead as the Jameson duo netted a pair of
markers at the 10:58 mark. Later in the period, the Leopards
notched a two goal lead as Martin Winzer (Nuremberg, Germany)
connected for a power-play goal with two seconds remaining in the
frame.
In the second period, Worcester State responded immediately,
scoring just 0:55 into the frame off Rintel’s first score of
the season. The Lancers answered again nine minutes later as
John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) knotted the score at
3-3 with his first marker of the year.
Wentworth battled back quickly, retaining its two goal lead later
in the period as Skylur Jameson and Tyler Medeiros (Somerset, MA)
registered back-to-back scores. Jameson ignited the rally with his
second score of the game at the 10:38 mark, while Medeiros added a
power play marker just four minutes later.
In the final period, Wentworth continued its scoring momentum,
rifling off four unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-3 lead.
Dionne started the Leopard rally at the 2:47 mark, before Medeiros,
Mike Paglino (Grosse Pointe Shores, MI) and Jameson added a goal
apiece to secure the victory.
In net, freshman Michael Jarobe (Grosse Point Shores, MI) earned
the victory for Wentworth, totaling 19 shots in the complete game
effort. Senior Andrew Evans (Cromwell, CT) notched
25 stops in the losing effort for the Lancers.
