Cahalane Nets Four In 4-1 Victory Over Westfield State

Auburn, MA --- Junior John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) registered all four markers for Worcester State in a 4-1 triumph over Westfield State in MASCAC Ice Hockey action this evening at Horgan Rink.

With the win the Lancers up their record to 4-2-3 and 3-1-1 in the conference while the Owls slip to 2-7-1 and 1-4 in league play.

The Blue and Gold got on the board midway through the opening frame when Cahalane recorded two goals, one minute apart. The first came at 9:48 with some help from freshman Ryan Quirk (Brockton, MA) and classmate Brendan Galley (Colorado Springs, CO) while the second came unassisted, just three seconds into a power play.

Westfield State trimmed the score at 10:43 in the second on freshman Taylor Murphy's (Toronto, ON) fifth goal of the year with the extra man advantage, but Cahalane answered back less than two minutes later on a short-handed tally for the hat trick.

The Lancers would end the middle stanza by killing off three penalties.

Gridlocked at 3-1 after 15 minutes came off the clock in the third, the Owls called for a timeout. They then would pull their goalie for an extra man on the ice, but the Lancers took advantage of the empty net as Cahalane would light up the siren to complete the games scoring on assists from senior Chris Wallin (Avon, CT) and junior Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA) with 1:02 left in the game.

The hat-trick was Cahalane's second career three-goal game after he did it in a 7-6 triumph against Western New England in his rookie season. With an assist this evening, Asterito continues to lead the team with 13 points – two goals and 11 helpers.

Junior Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) turned aside 39 of the 40 shots he saw this evening for the Lancers while third-year Ian Wilson (Tulsa, OK) recorded 20 saves in the setback.

Both teams will continue their respective schedules in MASCAC play. Worcester State entertains Salem State at 4:30 while Westfield State will travel north to Plymouth, NH to take on the Panthers at 3 o'clock.
