Degon Inducted Into Inaugural Worcester Ice Hockey Hall of Fame Class

Worcester, MA --- Former Worcester State Ice Hockey standout and current assistant coach Marvin Degon was recently inducted into the inaugural class of the Worcester Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. The class was introduced at the January 22nd Worcester Sharks game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Degon, who played ice hockey from 1971-1975 notched eye-popping totals of 209 goals and 317 points are the most in Worcester State ice hockey history while his 108 assists are the second-most in the record book.

In his rookie year (1971-72) Degon distinguished himself by scoring 71 goals in 24 games to have the second-highest goal scoring season in NCAA Division III history (2.96 goals per game) while his points (102 in 24 games) are the fourth-highest output all-time.

During the 1973-74 season, Degon returned to the team in January after having spent the first semester in Dayton with the minor league affiliate of the Boston Bruins. When he came back Marvin made an immediate impact in the second semester as he netted eight hat-tricks in 11 games down the stretch as the squad closed out the year winning 12 of its last 16 games.

In an ECAC playoff game versus Wesleyan, Degon saved his best performance for last as he recorded four goals and two assists in an 11-5 victory over the Cardinals as the Lancers took home the 1973-74 ECAC Division III Championship. His third goal of the game proved to be the game-winner for Worcester State.

Degon ended his career in the 1974-75 season setting the ECAC and NCAA Division III career record for hat tricks with 43 in 82 games. For accomplishing the feat he became the first and only Worcester State student-athlete recognized by Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd (March 3, 1975).

He finished his career second all-time in the NCAA Division III record book in goals (209) and fourth in career points (317). For his efforts during the 1974-75 season, Degon was tabbed an All-American by the NAIA and he was also distinguished with the Worcester State ice hockey team's Mathew Hehir Memorial Award.

In 1996, Degon was inducted into the St. Peter Hall of Fame for a standout ice hockey and baseball career in high school. He was a three-time Central Mass All-Star and in 1970-71, he led the region in scoring. In 2005, Degon and his teammates on the 1972-73 ice hockey team were inducted into the Worcester State Lancer Hall of Fame.

Degon is in his sixth year as an assistant coach for the Lancers who are currently 8-6-3. He served as the teams ice hockey coach from 1992-94. Degon has also been a NIHOA and CMHOA ice hockey official.

Degon's son, Marvin Degon, Jr., attended UMass Amherst from 2002-06 and is in his sixth season of playing semi-professional ice hockey.
