Lancers Erase 2-0 Deficit and Comeback to Defeat Plymouth State 3-2 for First MASCAC Win

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit and came back to defeat the visiting Plymouth State Panthers by a score of 3-2 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener Tuesday evening.

 

THE BASICS

1ST PERIOD

Plymouth State capitalized on 2-of-3 power play opportunities in the first period to lead 2-0 going into the second frame. Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) scored the first power play goal on assists from Ludvig Steenberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.). Stevens then assisted the second goal of the contest as he setup Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden) for the tally.  

 

2ND PERIOD

Worcester State University's Nick Patullo (Doylestown, Pa.) cut the deficit in half 8:55 into the second period on a power play goal, assisted by Andy DeAngelis (Poughquag, N.Y.). DeAngleis passed from the back left corner to Patullo who was standing in front of the net and tucked the puck past Plymouth State's Thierry Messervier (Chambly, Quebec). The Lancers made the game exciting as Worcester State's Michael Moran (Milford, Mass.) scored on a breakaway just 40 seconds later for the 2-2 score.

 

3RD PERIOD

The Lancers' game-winning goal came 5:44 into the final period as Khalil East (Los Angeles, Calif.) found Cody Slocum (Temecula, Calif.) on the right side. Following Worcester's third goal, the Panthers fired off 11 shots on net, which all were saved by sophomore goalie, Josh Reinstein (Woodland Hills, Calif.) to preserve the Lancers' MASCAC opener win.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Reinstein improves to 2-0 in net, as Worcester State saw an impressive 25-save performance from him.
  • Plymouth State's Messervier suffered his first loss in goal this season as he made 19 stops in the 59:22 minutes played.  
  • Plymouth State held a 27-22 edge in shots in the Tuesday night contest.
  • Plymouth State won 36-of-69 (.522) faceoffs, while Worcester State's Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich.) won a game-high 14 faceoffs.
  • The Panthers went 2-for-6 (.333) on power plays, while Worcester State secured a goal on 1-of-5 (.200) power play chances.
  • Worcester State totaled 14 penalty minutes on seven infractions, while Plymouth State had 12 on six infractions.

 

 

UP NEXT

The men's ice hockey team hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday (Nov. 4) when they travel to Franklin Pierce for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest. The Panthers open up at home on the same date as they host Stonehill on Alumni Night.
