WESTFIELD, Mass. – First-year Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich.) scored an early power play goal and sophomore goaltender Josh Reinstein (Woodland Hills, Calif.) turned away 27 shots to help Worcester State to a 1-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) shutout over Westfield State Saturday evening.

1^ST PERIOD

Worcester State University earned the first power play opportunity of the game and took advantage of the chance. Manning received passes from Mitchell Purdie (Peterborough, Ont.) and Alex Pommerville (Macedon, N.Y.) and scored a goal from the left face-off circle, enabling the Lancers a 1-0 tilt. The Lancers outshot the Owls 11-5 in the frame, but were unable to slip another shot past Westfield's goaltender, Kameron Limburg (Howell, Mich.) to head into the second period up by one.

2^ND PERIOD

Worcester State quickly gave the Owls a power play opportunity as a Lancer was penalized on an interference call. Worcester State served an additional six minutes on three other minor penalties in the frame. The Lancers were able to kill off four power plays total throughout the second period, despite the Owls firing off a game-high 16 shots.

3^RD PERIOD

In the final period, Reinstein stopped six shots on net to maintain the lead, despite two power plays for the hosts. Worcester State recorded eight shots, however, Limburg shut the Blue and Gold down in the final period. The final score was settled at 1-0 in favor of the Lancers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Westfield State held a 27-26 advantage in shots, as their strongest period was the second when they held a 16-7 advantage.
• Westfield State won 37-of-58 face-offs.
• Worcester State was perfect on power play chances, going 1-for-1 throughout the game. The power play goal by Manning proved to be the game-winner. 
• Reinstein was a huge impact on the Lancers' win tonight, as he stopped 27 shots in the 60 minutes played. This marks his fourth shutout of the season.
• Limburg made 25 saves in the setback.
• Last season, the Lancers were 1-2 against the Owls.

UP NEXT

The men's ice hockey team hits the road once again on Tuesday (Nov. 21) for a contest against Saint Anslem, before returning home for a 3-game stretch the following Thursday (Nov. 30) when they host UMass Dartmouth in a 7 p.m. game.
