Two Third Period Goals Carry Lancers to 4-2 Win over Post University

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's ice hockey team scored two goals in the third period to rise above Post University for a 4-2 win in a Friday night matchup inside the Worcester Ice Center.

 

THE BASICS

1ST PERIOD

The first attempt of the game was made by Post's Tyler Hackett (Branford, Conn.), but it ricocheted off of Lancer defender, wide of the cage. Another block would be made by Andy DeAngelis (Poughquag, N.Y.), keeping the game tied at 0-0, just under five minutes into the period. Hackett came crashing in toward the net for a wrist shot that was saved by the glove of Cory Lignelli (Glastonbury, Conn.) a little under eight minutes into the stanza. The tie would be broken by Worcester State's Mike Moran (Milford, Mass.), with a goal coming from right in front of the net, in front of Post goaltender, Devin Day (Fontana, Calif.), the goal came 13:22 into the period off of an assist by Nick Patullo (Doylestown, Pa.) giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead.  The next rush was made by Post with a shot by Kieran Hurley (Long Beach, N.Y.) being saved off of the pad of Lignelli, the rebound was recovered by Post's Matt Moreschi (Malden, Mass.), but was blocked by a diving Brian Allen (Brookfield, Conn.) by the net.  After a charging penalty made against Worcester State's Sean Castagna (Wilmington, Del.), Post made use of their power play opportunity and scored on a goal from Jake Raleigh (Raleigh, N.C.), assisted by Frank Moreschi (Malden, Mass.) and Brian Hurley (Long Beach, N.Y.), that knotted things up at 1-1.

 

2ND PERIOD

Post got off to a quick start with a pair of shots that were turned away by Lignelli. Coming down ice on an odd-man rush, Worcester State scored on a shot fired off of the stick of Mitchell Purdie (Peterborough, Ont.), CJ Buckingham (Pembroke Mass.) and Andrew Etheridge (Burrillville, R.I.) assisted, for the Lancers to go up, 2-1.  After a series of penalties leading to a 4-on-3 opportunity for Post, B. Hurley scored for the Eagles to tie the game at two apiece 8:20 into the period, off of an assist by Lucas Smith (Calgary, Alberta).  The period would end with the teams tied at 2-2.

 

3RD PERIOD

With 46 seconds off the clock Worcester State's Erik Pritchard (Cave Creek, Ariz.) struck off a rebound from a Purdie shot and received a pass from Allen for the Lancers to go up 3-2. Post failed to convert on a power play attempt after Pritchard was called for boarding at 12:20 in the final period. 15:23 in the period Etheridge scored off of a pass from Purdie to put the Lancers up 4-2. The period would end with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Lancers.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Etheridge and Purdie each tallied a goal and an assist in the win.
  • Allen logged a game-high two assists for Worcester State.
  • For the visitors, B. Hurley tallied two points on a goal and an assist in the setback.
  • Hackett won 17-of-25 faceoffs in the loss.
  • Worcester State's Lignelli earned his second win of the season in net with a 25-save performance.
  • Day suffered his second loss of the year, turning away 38 shots on goal.
  • The Lancers served 25 penalty minutes on seven infractions, while Post only served eight on four infractions.
  • Post converted on 2-of-6 (.333) power plays while Worcester State went 0-for-4.
