Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Assumption at Worcester Cup

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Worcester State men's ice hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to Assumption on Sunday evening in the consolation game of the first ever Worcester Cup tournament at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.

Brian Clougherty (Lynn, Mass.) scored twice for Worcester State, who also got a power play goal from Drew Eid (Gorham, Maine).

After Assumption opened the scoring in the first minute of play, Clougherty tucked home his first of the year on an assist from Max Tucker (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Henry Bruckner (Franklin, Mass.) at the midway point of the period.

Unfortunately, the tie was short-lived. Just twenty-three seconds later, Assumption took the lead again on their second unassisted tally of the game.

Another Assumption goal without an assist was the only scoring on either side in the second period, and it came with just 49 seconds left in the frame from the Greyhounds' Devan Sheth (Ashland, Mass.), the first of two for the senior forward.

Worcester traded goals twice with Assumption in the third, as Eid scored on the power-play at 4:16 of the period and Clugherty responded to Sheth's second goal of the night with his second three minutes from the end of regulation.

Assumption added an empty net goal to secure their first win of the year.

The Greyhounds had a 36-24 edge in shots as freshman Wyatt Friedlander (Lake Placid, N.Y.) made 30 saves for the Lancers in his first collegiate start. Thomas McLarnon (Fountainville, Penn.) earned the win by making 21 stops for Assumption.

Eid's powerplay goal was the only one for either team with the man advantage. Worcester State was 1-5 on the power play, and the Lancers killed off all six of Assumption's PP opportunities.

The Lancers (0-2) will play their first official "home" game of the year on Thursday at 6:40 PM when they host UMass Dartmouth at the Fidelity Bank Center.

Assumption (1-1-1) hosts Stonehill next Friday night at 6:50.
