Men's Soccer Soars Past Falcons 4-0

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State University men's soccer team won 4-0 to open up Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play against opponent Fitchburg State, on Saturday afternoon at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

With the win the Lancers improve to 2-4-1 on the season and are 1-1 in conference play. The Falcons fall to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Lancers had their first goal just over one minute into the game when Matt Alzamora (Holden, Mass.) headed one just off the Fitchburg's goalkeeper, Sebastian Jaramillo (Dracut, Mass.), and Santino Romeo (Sutton, Mass.) put the ball right into the back of the net. Nate Lewos (Auburn, Mass.) crossed the ball right to Fidel Castro (Auburn, Mass.) who was able to put the Lancers up 2-0. Worcester State wasn't done scoring yet, Juma Kombe (Leominster, Mass.) dribbled through the Fitchhburg defense easily and from wide right sent a shot into the back left of the goal giving the Lancers the insurance they needed. Gabriel Texeira (Lunenburg, Mass.) had the best opportunity for the Falcons in the half when his shot hit the post just wide of heading into the net.

The second half was quiet for the most part, both defenses playing strong and limiting opportunities for shots. However, in the 65th minute of play Kombe touched the ball right into the net off of a textbook cross from Zacary Crawford (Lebanon, Conn.). Moritz Vetter (Herbolzheim, Germany) hit a shot off the cross bar for the Falcons and the ball rebounded to the feet of John Javaloyes (Mansfield, Mass.) who put the ball just high of the net in Fitchburg's biggest opportunity of the day.

Jaramillo picked up four saves in his effort for the Falcons. Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) had three saves in his winning time in net. Christian Packard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Dylan Ruberti (Westborough, Mass.) both saw time in net for the Lancers, neither picking up any saves in their time.

The Lancers return to action Saturday for conference play when they head to Westfield State. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m.
