Men's Soccer Shut Out by Salem State

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State University men's soccer team lost 3-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play against opponent Salem State, on Saturday afternoon at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

With the loss the Lancers fall to 3-6-1 on the season and are 2-3 in conference play. The Vikings improve to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Both teams struggled to take control of the half and the ball found itself at midfield for the majority of the first 45 minutes. Two yellow cards against the Lancers gave the Vikings a couple of opportunities to put shots on net, but were unable to sneak any past Lancer goalkeeper, Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.).

Salem State's Kendy Prince (Medford, Mass.) tallied a hat trick in the second half to give the Viking the victory. His first goal came off a penalty kick after Ramirez committed a foul in the box and he sailed the ball past the goalkeeper. His next two both came off feeds from sophomore, Aaron O'Toole (Quincy, Mass.) when he put both shots into the lower left side of the net. The Lancers had two solid opportunities to put points on the board but were unable to convert either into goals. Kristi Shore (Korce, Albania) had a header early in the second half that went right into the hands of Salem State goalkeeper, Matt Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.). Santino Romeo (Sutton, Mass.) had a breakaway down the field, but was tripped up and unable to get a shot off to grab a goal for the Lancers.

Hauntsman recorded five goals on the day, while Ramirez tallied three.

The Lancers return to action Wednesday when they host MIT. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The Vikings head to Wheaton on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. game.
