Men’s Soccer Season Concludes in MASCAC Quarterfinals

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The sixth seeded Worcester State men's soccer team saw their 2021 season come to close on Tuesday afternoon as they fell 6-0 to #3 seed Bridgewater State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament quarterfinals at Swenson Field.

The defeat marks the final game in the Lancer career of seniors Tomas Caneira (Dartmouth, Mass.), Joe Donnelly (Dracut, Mass.), Ethan Paiva (Dartmouth, Mass.), Alexander Papageorgiou (Tewksbury, Mass.), Cyrus Raines (Belchertown, Mass.) and Kristi Shore (Korce, Albania).

Robson Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) scored twice for Bridgewater, who led 2-0 at halftime after a pair of headed in goals.

In the eighth minute, Montrond nodded home his team-leading eighth goal of the season on a corner kick, one of six in the game for the home team. The free kick was delivered by Carsten Boloz (Southborough, Mass.), who earned his third assist of the season.

Bridgewater doubled their lead just before the 20-minute mark on another headed ball, this one in the run of play. David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) sent the ball in from the right side and it was headed home by Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.), giving the graduate student and team captain his first goal of the season.

Bridgewater outshot the Lancers 11-6 in the first half, including 6-1 on goal, and had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Nelson got on the scoresheet himself less than five minutes into the second half when he broke into the box and beat Worcester State sophomore goalie Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) to the far post.

Ramirez made 13 seven saves for Worcester, while senior William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) earned the shutout after making 5 saves for the Bears.

The Lancers had 17 shots, but only five of them were on goal, while 13 of Bridgewater's 20 shots were on target.

Montrond completed his brace with an unassisted goal in the 56th minute, and the Bears added two goals just 23 seconds apart in the final third of the game.

Bridgewater State (8-9), the #3 seed, will advance to play #2 seed Framingham on Friday at 6:00 PM.

The Lancers see their season come to a close with a record of 3-11-1.
