Lancers Set the Pace at Sunshine Classic

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's Track and Field returned to action today as they competed in their final meet before the MASCAC Championships next weekend in Fitchburg. Sophomore Brodie Jaqcues (Rehoboth, MA) and first years Taylor Gavaletz (Dudley, MA) and James Riley (Shrewsbury, MA) continued their success of the season with a number of top finishes in the afternoon while senior Colin Brennan (Newbury, MA) continued his success in the field events.

The men's 4x100m team was made up of senior Brendan Sharkey (Fort Wayne, IN), sophomore Giovanni Casiano (Oxford, MA), junior Anthony Paolucci (Billerica, MA) and first year Elvis Velez (Clinton, MA) had a strong showing to start the day with a 5th place 46.86 second finish. Jacques would continue on the 100m success with a third place finish at 10.91 seconds, which he would then carry over to the 200m where he would cross in 6th place in 22.46 seconds. Joining him in the half a lap was Velez in 14th at 23.32, first year Seth Boudreau (Douglas, MA) in 17th at 23.54. Sharkey crossed the finish line in 21st at a brisk 23.98 followed close behind by relay teammate Casiano in 27th at 24.67. Closing out the heavily packed Worcester State field was first year Alan Gomez (Clinton, MA) in 31st at 25.55 and junior Anthony Paolucci (Billerica, MA) in 33rd at 26.33 seconds. 

First year Taylor Gaveltz (Dudley, MA)  hit the track in the 400m hurdles coming away with another 5th place finish, this time in a 61.46 second pace. Another heavy filled Worcester State event on the afternoon was the 1500m that had senior Daniel Clark (Worcester, MA) cross in 16th at 4:23.80 followed by first year Alexander Lucier (Gardner, MA) in 20th at 4:28.72, junior Matthre Talbot (Belchertown, MA) in 25th at 4:33.61 and First year Andrew Stokes (Wilmington, MA) in 28th at 4:59.51. The 400m race saw a number of Lancers in the pack with first year Seth Boudreau (Douglas, MA) claiming the top Lancer finish with a time of 53.39 for 7th place, he was joined by sophomore Brian O'Leary (Marlborough, MA) who crossed in 56.31 for 15th, first year Alan Gomez (Clinton, MA) in 60.09 for 16th and Paolucci in a time of 63.55 for 18th. 

The Lancers showed endurance strength today with two top five finishes in the 5000m at Riley claiming the top spot with a 16:20.26 race and fellow first year Alexander Matsuyasu (Newton, MA) wrapped up the fifth spot with a 18:00.98 finish. Wrapping up the day on the track was the 4x400m made up of Boudreau, Clark, Gavaletz and O'Leary who crossed the finish line in 5th with a time of 3:48.77.

The field events had strong showing in the afternoon with Brennan sending his Javelin 49.58m for a fourth place finish while fellow teammate junior Matthew Long recorded a 42.77m for 9th. Long would return to the action in the hammer throw notching a 33.5m for 14th. Junior Jack Houlihan would claim the top Worcester State spot in the event with a 41.99m that found him in 7th on the day. Sophomore Max O'Connor (Dedham, MA) would close out the event for the Lancers with a 27.70m toss for 18th. Houlihan and O'Connor would be back in action to close out the meet in the discus where Houlihan would claim 7th with a 38.5m toss and close behind was O'Connor with a 37.60m throw for 9th place. 

Jacques returned to find matching success in the field as he competed in the long jump for a 3rd place leap of 6.69m. Joining Jacques was Velez with a 5.88m, 12th place finish, Casiano in 16th with a 5.24m and Boudreau marking a 5.00m for 17th. Boudreau would also find himself a 10th place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 10.84m.

The Men's Outdoor Track and Field team is back in action on April 29th as they travel to Fitchburg State for the 2023 MASCAC Outdoor Track Championship.
