Mahoney Selected MASCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

Buzzards Bay, MA --- For the second time this season and third time in her two-year career, junior southpaw Michaella Mahoney has been named MASCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for her performance this past week in the circle for Worcester State.

Mahoney, who hails from Shrewsbury, posted a 3-1 record with a 1.66 earned run average. Mahoney fanned 14 in 25 1/3 innings pitched. After she started off the week with a 10-4 triumph over Western Connecticut, Mahoney helped the Lancers win a pair of conference road games against Westfield State.

Mahoney went the distance in the opening game 6-4 victory over the Owls and she hurled 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to help WSC take the night cap, 4-3. Mahoney, who batted .412 last week, aided her teams cause in a big way in the second contest as she smacked a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh help the Blue and Gold complete the sweep.

Mahoney currently leads the MASCAC in ERA (0.84) while she is also second in innings pitched (75.1) and third in both victories (7) and strikeouts (59). Mahoney has nine complete games to her credit with three shutouts and she has held opponents to a conference best .170 batting average.

Mahoney has also had a tremendous season offensively as she is fifth in the MASCAC in batting average (.426), third in RBIs (16) and third in total bases (37). Her three home runs are also tied for first in the conference.

The Lancers are currently 11-9 and 3-1 in the MASCAC under the guidance of second-year head coach Jen Kapenas. In their first victory against Westfield State, the Lancers equaled their win total from last season (10) and they beat the Owls for the first time since 2004.

The Blue and Gold play their next game against city rival WPI on Wednesday in a double header starting at 3 o’clock.
