The Worcester State softball team shared the 2011 MASCAC regular-season title with Westfield State, captured the MASCAC Tournament, and won a game in the NCAAs.
Despite that — plus returning three all-conference selections, four players who hit better than .300, and a pitcher who ranked second in the conference in ERA — the Lancers were not picked to repeat in 2012.
"That got to us," junior second baseman Aimee Lamoureux of East Brookfield said. "We've definitely used that as motivation."
After a 2-8 start this season, Worcester State has won 14 of 18 and on Saturday claimed its first outright regular-season MASCAC title since 1987.
The top-seeded Lancers will host the MASCAC Tournament this weekend at Rockwood Field. WSU (21-17) plays No. 4 Westfield State (19-18) at 5 p.m. tomorrow.
"We have a great group of kids that has worked extremely hard," fourth-year coach Jen Kapenas said. "We've been consistent, and everyone contributes."
Lamoureux, who transferred to Worcester State last year after a season at Franklin Pierce, has put up outstanding numbers. She leads the team in batting (.342), hits (40), doubles (9) and stolen bases (13), and has continued to dazzle defensively.
