Softball Defeated Twice By Bowdoin and SUNY Geneseo To Close Florida Trip

Clermont, FL --- Freshman Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI), classmate Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, CT) and sophomore Sara Pelletier (Leominster, MA) all tallied two base-knocks apiece to help propel Worcester State in a 7-4 setback against Bowdoin and a 4-0 loss against SUNY Geneseo on Friday afternoon.

The Lancers (2-5) snapped a scoreless game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by second-year Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, MA) to knock in classmate Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, MA).

The Polar Bears (8-4), however, took advantage of a dropped ground ball in the top of the fourth by the first baseman and took over the 6-1 edge.

Worcester State answered in the bottom of the frame with plated runs by Humphrey and Terry. WSU looked poised to score again with the bases loaded, but Bowdoin freshman Emily Griffin (Tuscon, AZ) fanned consecutive batters at the plate to end the threat.

In the fifth, the Blue and Gold cut the lead in half for the 6-3 contest. Humphrey hammered a triple into the right field corner and crossed home on a ground-out by Terry.

But Griffin was effective over the last two innings as she set down eight of her last nine to seal up the triumph for her squad.

Humphrey and Salisbury both registered two safeties each in a six-hit attack while Terry had two RBIs.

Rich (1-2) was tagged with the losing decision for Worcester State. Rich allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits going the contests first three stanzas.

Humphrey hurled four effective innings of relief to give the Lancers a chance before being touched up for one earned run in the top of the seventh.

In their victory over the Lancers, SUNY Geneseo (2-4-1) senior Sam Trepasso (Garden City, NY) belted a two-run double in the top of the third for the early 2-0 edge. Trepasso came up big for the Knights again in the seventh by jacking a two-bagger which scored a pair of runs and the 4-0 lead.

Sophomore Mikayla Moore (Stillwater, NY) tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts for SUNY Geneseo in the nightcap to shut down the Blue and Gold offense.

The Lancers had chances with runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth with two down, but Moore buckled down and retired the side.

WSU had another opportunity with sophomore Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) on second base and no one out in the fifth. Moore, however, left her stranded by setting down the next three batters in order.

Sophomore Marissa Avanzato (Pittsfield, MA) was dealt the loss for the Blue and Gold. Avanzato (0-1) allowed two earned runs on two hits over her 3 1/3 innings. She also run up two on strikes and issued a trio of walks.

Pelletier chipped in with two of the WSU's three base-knocks in the setback.

The Lancers kick off their Northern schedule with a 3 PM doubleheader on Tuesday against Clark.
