Lancers Finish Triple-Header Day with 6-5 Win over St. Norbert

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Worcester State Lancers went 1-2 in their second day of the spring games, as they fell to Southern Maine and Hood College, but ended the day with a 6-5 victory over St. Norbert College.

 

GAME ONE: Worcester State 10, Southern Maine 11

Worcester State and Southern Maine went back-and-forth throughout the first half of the game, as the game was tied 6-6 following the completion of the 3rd inning.

 

After Worcester State had an 8-7 lead going into the 6th inning, Southern Maine came through with three runs on three hits from Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.), Shelby Obert (Norridgewock, Me.) and Samantha Crosman (S. Berwick, Me.) to take the 10-8 advantage going into the 7th.

 

However, Worcester State came through with two runs on a single from Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, Conn.) and an error on Southern Maine to tie the game at 10-10. The Huskies had a chance to take the lead and the bottom of the 7th, and succeeded as Amber Kelly (Berwick, Me.) doubled to left field with one out on the board. With two outs and Kelly on second, Obert came in with another double to right center to score Kelly at the plate, claiming the win for the Huskies.

 

Southern Maine's Crosman batted a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Obert went 3-for-5 with three RBI as well. Davis batted .500 (2-for-4) on the afternoon, while Mary Caron (Lewiston, Me.) registered a home run and two RBI.

 

For the Lancers, Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 2-for-3, while four players batted at .500, including Sara Pelletier (Leominster, Mass.), Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.), Humphrey, and Mary McKeown (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Despres knocked her first Lancers home run out of the park against the Huskies, ringing in a team-high four RBI.

 

Southern Maine's Crystal West (S. Paris, Me.) earned her first win on the mound, as she relieved starting pitcher, Kelly, in the 5th inning. Worcester State's Humphrey suffered the loss, as she pitched 6.2 innings, facing 33 batters at the plate.

 

GAME TWO: Worcester State 0, Hood 3

Hood College's Sophia Leaman (Mount Jay, Pa.) pitched a complete game for the Blazers, only allowing four Worcester State hits and no runs for a shutout, striking out eight in her 28 batters faced.

 

Hood got on the board early with one run in the top of the 1st from an RBI double from Roo Saglimbeni (Woodbine, Md.).

 

The Blazers added to their lead in the top of the 4th as Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md.) singled through the left side to score Saglimbeni at the plate. Their last and final run of the game was scored in the top of the 5th to result in a score of 3-0 in the Blazers' favor.

 

Hood's Kristen Scott (Rockville, Md.) batted 2-for-3, while Saglimbeni and Fourcade each went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

 

The Lancers' Taylor Daniels (Norco, Calif.) held three of the teams' four hits, going 3-for-4 from the plate with a double and a stolen base on the offensive end. Worcester State's Julie Melanson (Gardner, Mass.) registered the loss for the Lancers, as she allowed five hits and three runs (two unearned) and struck out seven at the plate.

 

GAME THREE: Worcester State 6, St. Norbert's 5

The Lancers closed their day out with a 6-5 victory over the St. Norbert Green Knights as Worcester State's Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, Mass.) tallied up nine strikeouts in her five innings pitched, and Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, Mass.) closed the game out for her first save of the season.

 

Worcester State's Taylor Daniels (Norco, Calif.) finished her day out with a .750 batting average (3-for-4) with two runs and an RBI. Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, Mass.) went 1-for-2, while four Lancer batters went 1-for-3 on the afternoon.

 

For the Green Knights, Gina Mastrodomenico (Bloomingdale, Ill.) batted 2-for-3, while Tia Danfourth (Oneida, Wis.) and Amanda Van Handel (Hortonville, Wis.) batted .500. Danforth and Emily Laufer (West Bend, Wisc.) both hit home runs for two and one RBI, respectively.

 

Worcester State led the game in its entirety, even though the game was within one at three points in the game, including the last and final 7th inning where the Green Knights rallied and scored a run on Laufer's home run.

 

The Lancers return to action tomorrow for another triple-header where they will matchup against Kalamazoo, Allegheny, and Thomas, all at Hancock Park located in Clermont, Fla.
