Lancers Win One on Last Triple-Header Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Worcester State Lancers went 1-2 on their last triple-header day in Florida, starting their day out with a 6-3 win over Wellesley College, and then dropping two against Fredonia and Salve Regina.

 

GAME ONE: Worcester State 6, Wellesley 3

Worcester State's Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.) and Taylor Daniels (Norco, Calif.) assisted in scoring five out of the six runs scored in the 6-3 win over the Wellesley Blue Thursday morning. Despres racked up two homeruns and three RBI. Daniels hit her first home run in a Lancer uniform, registering two RBI against the Blue.

 

Worcester State's Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI) scored the first run of the game when Daniels hit through the left side for an RBI. They added to their lead in the 2nd when Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, Mass.) reached the plate on an RBI single from Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, Conn.).

 

With the Lancers on top, the Wellesley Blue stormed through with a strong 3rd inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Wellesley's Julia Warner (Kenmore, Wa.) reached base on a single to left field, and advance on a sacrifice bunt. She rounded the bases and scored on a single from Amanda Manning (Durham Calif.), from where two more runs reached the plate on a single from Carly Bresee (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), a double from Jaclyn Tsang (Manalapan, N.J.), and an RBI from Ashtyn Coleman (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

 

Worcester State stole the lead from the Blue in the top of the 4th when Despres and Daniels hit back-to-back solo home runs, bringing the score to 4-3 in the Lancers' favor.

 

The Blue and Gold secured the win in the bottom of the 7th, when Despres hit another home run to score her and Salisbury at the plate for the 6-3 gain.

 

Worcester State's pitcher, Humphrey, registered her second win of the season. She pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits and three runs. For the Blue, Warner suffered the loss, also giving up 11 hits and five earned runs.

 

GAME TWO: Fredonia 8, Worcester State 5

With Fredonia ahead 7-0 in the first two innings of play, Worcester State wasn't able to register a hit off of the Blue Devils' pitcher, Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y.), until the bottom of the 5th inning. Carlson pitched a complete game and only gave up five hits in her 33 batters faced.

 

Down by seven for the majority of the game, the Lancers cut their deficit to four following their moving 5th inning, when Corrie Deroiser (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Sara Pelletier (Leominster, Mass.), and Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI) crossed the plate to mark the score at 7-3.

 

The Blue Devils answered with another run in the top of the 6th, from where the Lancers chipped away at the Fredonia lead, adding two runs in the bottom of the inning. Though, it wasn't enough as each team closed the 7th out with 1-2-3 innings.

 

Worcester State's Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, Mass.) absorbed the loss, pitching for 1.2 innings. Relief pitcher, Zoe Haley (Bellingham, Mass.) finished the game out, only allowing one run to cross home plate.

 

GAME THREE: Salve Regina 4, Worcester State 2

After four scoreless innings, the Salve Regina Seahawks logged four runs on four hits and one Lancer error to advance the score to 4-0 in their favor. Back-to-back singles from Lexi Soucie (North Easton, Mass.), Nikki Bukovsky (Westport, Conn.), Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.), and Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) along with an error supported the runs scored.

 

The Lancers responded in the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings with one run apiece. Though, it was not enough to make a comeback as the Seahawks shut the Lancers out in the bottom of the 7th.

 

Nicole Parry (Quincy, Mass.) earned her first victory of the season, pitching a complete game and striking out six. Worcester State's Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, Mass.) also pitched a complete game and drops to 1-2 on the season.

 

The Lancers return to action tomorrow at 11am at Legends Way in Clermont, Fla. to take on Bowdoin in their last Florida Spring Game.
