BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in three runs to lead Worcester State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 12-0 in the opener and 11-0 in the nightcap in a pair of five inning contests played Sunday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

GAME ONE: Worcester State 12, Mass. Maritime 0

The visiting Lancers (10-9-1, 4-0 MASCAC) built a 5-0 second inning lead in the opener and iced their first triumph with a five-run third inning rally, as junior Samantha Rivers (Leicester, Mass.) collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs in the lid-lifter.  Despres, seniors Hayley Terry (North Dighton, Mass.) and Taylor Daniels (Norco, Calif.), junior Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Samantha Orner (Oxford, Conn.) had two hits each as part of a 19-hit attack in the opener for Worcester State, which added two more tallies in the fifth to account for the final margin.  Junior Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, Mass.) earned her second win in three decisions inside the circle for the Lancers, as she scattered three hits and struck out eight while helping her own cause at the plate with three hits and three RBI.  Sophomore Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.) and freshman Emily Goodwin (Halifax, Mass.) rapped out hits in the first game setback for the host Buccaneers (1-11, 0-4 MASCAC), as sophomore Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) also collected a single and recorded a pair of strikeouts in suffering the setback inside the circle.

GAME TWO: Worcester State 11, Mass. Maritime 0

Worcester State got all of its runs in its first four at-bats of the nightcap (including four in the second inning), as junior Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) belted a solo homer and drove in four runs for the visitors.  Despres paced a 13-hit Lancer attack that included her sixth round-tripper of the season, while senior Marissa Avanzato (Pittsfield, Mass.) also had two hits for the winners.  Salisbury drove in two runs in support of sophomore battery mate Julie Melanson (Gardner, Mass.), who allowed five hits and struck out five in going the distance to improve to 2-1 on the spring for the Lancers.  Sophomores Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.), Olivia Norton (Quincy, Mass.), Emily Bacchiocchi (Wareham, Mass.) and Haley Delahanty (Holden, Mass.) recorded hits in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Thomas also singled and struck out one over four innings of work inside the circle for the hosts.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Pine Manor in a non-league doubleheader that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Worcester State travels across town on Tuesday afternoon for a non-league twinbill with WPI beginning at 4:00 p.m.
