Lancers Drop Pair of Games at Spring Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Worcester State dropped a heartbreaking opening game to Wilson in the opening game on Thursday afternoon and then fell in the nightcap as they continued play at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

Worcester State has one more day in Myrtle Beach. They will play tomorrow at 9:30 AM against Albertus Magnus before finishing their trip against Franciscan at 1:30 PM.

Game 1: Wilson 1, Worcester State 0

Wilson scored one unearned run in the top of the first and the two teams put up zeroes the rest of the way as the Phoenix handed the Lancers the slimmest of defeats.

Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md.) was spectacular in the circle for Wilson, striking out ten and allowing just four hits and no walks in a complete game shutout victory.

Molly Glynn (Abington, Mass.) and Jen Thorburn (Groton, Mass.) combined to allow just five hits and one unearned run for the Lancers, who only had two players reach second base. Brynna Meeker (Northwood, N.H.) had the best chance to score in the bottom of the sixth when she got thrown out at third trying to advance on an infield bunt single.

Center fielder Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, Pa.) was on base three times for the Phoenix. She led off the game with a walk, one of two free passes she took on the day, and scored with two outs on an error in center field.

Game 2: Lycoming 6, Worcester State 2

A pair of triples, one in the fourth from senior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) and one in the fifth inning from sophomore Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), and a complete-game six hitter from sophomore Payton Whary (Shamokin, Pa./Shamokin Area) helped Lycoming earn the victory.

Whary (1-2) finished off a complete game, facing just 27 batters while allowing six hits, one earned run and a walk. She also struck out one in her first win of the year.

After single runs from the Lancers in the second and fourth innings, the Warriors (2-4 overall) got on the board with a four-run fourth inning. Senior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) started the inning with a one-out triple to right before scoring on a two-out wild pitch. Senior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) kept the inning alive with a single before sophomore Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) singled, setting up a fly ball down the line by first-year Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) that a diving right fielder couldn't corral, allowing the tying run to score. An error on the next play allowed both DeWolfe and Daub to also score.

Segraves hit a one-out triple in the fifth before scoring on a groundout to make it 5-2. In the sixth, DeWolfe led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single through the right side by first-year Molly Shappell (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area).

The Warriors flashed some leather in the sixth. With a runner on first, sophomore Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) ranged deep to her right to stab a liner headed for the wall in left field, and an alert appeal caught the runner for missing second on the way back to first. Then junior Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) made a diving catch in center field, rolling over to show the ball in the shallow outfield.

Rachel Sinclair led the Lancers, going 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Emily Bartlett (1-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. She struck out four.
