Lancers Split with Lasers in 2022 Home Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University softball team won the opening game of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader against Lasell University, securing a split of their home opener at Rockwood Field. 

The Lancers (5-7) held off the Lasers (3-7) for a 3-2 victory in the opener and then fell to Lasell 7-2 in the nightcap. 

Worcester State plays on the road again a week from tonight when they visit Clark for a 3:00 pm doubleheader. 

Game 1: Worcester state 3, Lasell 2 

Triples by Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.) and Brynna Meeker (Northwood, N.H.) drove in runs for the Lancers, who made an early 3-2 lead hold up as the final score. 

Bartlett struck out eight batters and worked out of several late inning jams. She allowed just one earned run on four hits in a complete game, improving to 2-3. 

The Lancers never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Bartlett tripled home Emma Lanpher (Charlton, Mass.). Lasell tied the game in the second but Worcester took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. 

Ally Tocman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Naraylee Baez (Northborough, Mass.) crossed the plate in the frame, with Baez scoring the eventual game winning run when Meeker hit a triple down the right field line. 

Game 2: Lasell 7, Worcester State 2 

Lasell scored four runs in the top of the fourth and took advantage of several Lancer errors I'm a game that saw the teams combine for seven total miscues. 

Third baseman Katie Hopkins (Garden City Park, N.Y.) was and first baseman Angelena Piers (Raynham, Mass.) drove in three runs for the Lasers. 

Worcester got on the board with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, but was held to just five hits. Jordan Geloso (Rutland, Mass.) was 1-3 wit ha run scored, as was Bartlett. Jen Thorburn (Groton, Mass.) fell to 2-2 after allowing two earned runs over an inning and two thirds. Molly Glynn (Abington, Mass.) allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings o relief, and Bartlett tossed a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts.
